Your new favorite Opening Day tradition returns for 2026! To celebrate one of Detroit's greatest-ever baseball players and to send up a prayer for another exciting season of Detroit baseball, we'll gather on Section 2 for coffee and donuts on Opening Day, Friday, April 3, at 9:30 a.m. Stop by Elmwood before you head to the ballpark and pay tribute to "Big" Sam Thompson, one of the most fearsome sluggers of all time and a Baseball Hall of Famer since 1974. (Also to his wife Ida, who was an Opening Day celebrity until her death in 1947.) This casual gathering will last for about an hour or until we run out of coffee. Stay tuned for more details to come early in 2026!
